Michael G. Murphy has been an educator for over 30 years. He began his career teaching public school – 5th and 6th grades – in Mineral Point, WI. Michael spent nine years at University Liggett School, a PK-12 independent day school in Grosse Pointe, MI, as a teacher and lower school division head. He then served as Headmaster of The Bright School in Chattanooga, TN from 1994-2004. Michael was appointed Head of School at Seattle Country Day School in 2004. He serves as Treasurer and executive committee board member for the Pacific Northwest Association of Independent Schools.
A native of Winona, MN, Michael worked ten summers as a camp counselor and assistant director at Camp Voyageur in Ely, MN, where his interest in outdoor education and teaching began. Today, he enjoys all aspects of SCDS – the business elements, the families, the teachers, the curriculum, and especially the students, whom he greets at carpool almost every morning.
